Grassroots initiatives from Utrecht Region give us inspiration for a social transformation towards ecological sustainability and social justice

What is AndersUtrecht?
AndersUtrecht is a project that aims to develop a network to give visibility and strengthen the cooperation of the initiatives working towards ecological sustainability and social change in the Utrecht Region.
AndersUtrecht includes grassroots initiatives in the broadest sense of the word: from formal associations to citizen movements, social enterprises to neighbourhood initiatives. This network puts initiatives on the map, making them visible and stimulating cooperation between parties, to increase our collective force. We celebrate the variation in the existing initiatives, that deal with the societal challenges in different ways. While some of them might be visible and accessible by the broader clusters of the society, others are less visible, but still highly valued by their communities.
Engaged communities, engaged academics
We are a group of scholars from Utrecht University who are interested in studying and developing ecologically sustainable and socially just ways of organizing economy and society. We believe that the current challenges – such as socioeconomic inequality, climate change and the current pandemic – beg for novel forms of engagement of the university and academics with the communities who deal with these issues on the ground.
For this purpose, we would like to bring together the strengths of theory and practice and work for creating social impact by doing research, teaching and engaging with societal challenges within and outside the university. This attempt for developing ecologically sustainable and socially just society is based on the aspiration of building a collective which shares a similar view for the future.
The AndersUtrecht Podcast Series
We have launched a new podcast series that brings together scholars and grassroots initiatives. It celebrates the variety among existing initiatives that deal with the societal challenges in creative ways, and fosters dialogue between these organizations as well as with affiliated scholars.
In this podcast series, representatives of these initiatives enter into conversation with different scholars to discuss how they tackle the challenges of sustainability transformation from the bottom up. These discussions explore the shared ideas between academics working on organizational alternatives and local initiatives experimenting with real alternatives to the default capitalist model. The podcast series, which will be released monthly, illustrates the breadth and variety of grassroots organizations in and around Utrecht, while also showing how much common ground there is for collaboration and transformation. They thereby represent an important step in strengthening the dialogue between Utrecht University and grassroots initiatives, while drawing attention to the diversity of practices and ideas for social change which circulate amongst the members of AndersUtrecht.
Each episode focuses on urban life and informs the audience about major challenges and opportunities generated by grassroots initiatives. The participants in these podcasts provide a wealth of hints and tips to help citizens participate in ongoing processes of social transformation. The episodes will be released each month and follow the sequence below:

Basisinitiatieven uit de regio Utrecht geven ons inspiratie voor een sociale transformatie naar ecologische duurzaamheid en sociale rechtvaardigheid
Wat is AndersUtrecht?
AndersUtrechtis een project dat beoogt een netwerk op te bouwen van Basisinitiatieven die zich bezighouden met ecologische duurzaamheid en sociale verandering in en rondom de stad Utrecht.
Basisinitiatieven in de breedste zin van het woord: van formele verenigingen tot burgerbewegingen, sociale ondernemingen tot buurtgroepen. Dit netwerk zet initiatieven zichtbaar op de kaart en bevordert onderlinge samenwerking, om de collectieve draagkracht te verbreden. We vieren de variatie in bestaande initiatieven, die elk op hun eigen manier maatschappelijke uitdagingen aangaan. Sommige initiatieven zijn breed zichtbaar en toegankelijk binnen veel maatschappelijke lagen, andere zijn minder zichtbaar maar ook van onvoorstelbaar belang voor hun gemeenschappen.
Betrokken gemeenschappen, betrokken academici
Wij zijn een groep onderzoekers van de Universiteit Utrecht, geïnteresseerd in het bestuderen en ontwikkelen van ecologisch duurzame en sociaal rechtvaardige manieren van het organiseren van onze economie en maatschappij. We geloven dat hedendaagse uitdagingen – zoals socio-economische ongelijkheid, klimaatverandering en de huidige pandemie – vragen om hernieuwde betrokkenheid van de universiteit en academici met de gemeenschappen die deze uitdagingen in de praktijk ondervinden.
Daarom streven we ernaar de kracht van theorie en praktijk samen te brengen, zodat we sociale impact kunnen creëren met het doen van onderzoek, onderwijzen en door betrokken te raken bij maatschappelijke uitdagingen binnen én buiten de universiteit. Onze wens om bij te dragen aan een ecologisch duurzame en sociaal rechtvaardige maatschappij vertaalt zich in ons streven om een collectief op te zetten, wat zich baseert op een gelijke toekomstvisie.
The AndersUtrecht Podcast Series
We hebben een nieuwe podcast series gelanceerd die wetenschappers en basisinitiatieven samenbrengt. Het viert de verscheidenheid onder bestaande initiatieven die de maatschappelijke uitdagingen op creatieve manieren aanpakken, en bevordert de dialoog tussen deze organisaties en met gelieerde wetenschappers.
In deze podcast serie gaan vertegenwoordigers van deze initiatieven in gesprek met verschillende wetenschappers om te bespreken hoe zij de uitdagingen van duurzaamheidstransformatie van onderop aanpakken. Deze gesprekken verkennen de gedeelde ideeën tussen academici die werken aan organisatorische alternatieven en lokale initiatieven die experimenteren met echte alternatieven voor het standaard kapitalistische model. De podcast serie, die maandelijks zal verschijnen, illustreert de breedte en variëteit van grassroots organisaties in en rond Utrecht, terwijl het ook laat zien hoeveel gemeenschappelijke grond er is voor samenwerking en transformatie. De podcasts vormen een belangrijke stap in het versterken van de dialoog tussen de Universiteit Utrecht en grassroots initiatieven, en vestigen de aandacht op de diversiteit aan praktijken en ideeën voor sociale verandering die circuleren onder de leden van AndersUtrecht.
Elke aflevering concentreert zich op het stadsleven en informeert het publiek over belangrijke uitdagingen en kansen die door grassroots initiatieven worden gegenereerd. De deelnemers aan deze podcasts geven een schat aan hints en tips om burgers te helpen deel te nemen aan lopende processen van sociale verandering. De afleveringen worden elke maand uitgebracht en volgen de onderstaande volgorde:
